Equity of Opportunity

EMS is committed to providing equity of opportunity to applicants.  To this end, we have support available for students with SEND and those in receipt of Free School Meals.  If applicants are facing any barriers to fully participating in our admissions process, we encourage them to get in touch with the admissions teams (admissions@exeterms.ac.uk) or telephone 01392 429020 to enable us to make reasonable adjustments.

Free School Meals

Evidence shows that students in receipt of Free School Meals are more likely than their peers to face barriers in accessing education opportunities. Therefore, to support equity of opportunity, we offer additional support to applicants in receipt of Free School Meals by providing:

  • Travel bursaries to attend admissions events including Taster Days, the entrance test, interview and information days.
  • Administrative assistance to complete the application form, when requested.
  • Written and oral feedback on applicants’ responses to sample entrance test questions
  • Mock interviews and feedback for those who are selected for interview.

If you are a applicant or the parent/carer of a applicant in receipt of Free School Meals, our admissions team will contact you to explain what we can offer in more detail.  All you need to do is indicate that you are eligible on your application form and/or Taster Day sign-up form.

Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Applicants with SEND should  make this clear on their application form and indicate the support that they feel they need.  We will then make reasonable adjustments to enable such applicants are able to fully participate in the admissions process. The precise nature of those adjustments will depend on the needs and normal ways of working of each applicant.  Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing the same access arrangements for the entrance test as those given for GCSEs
  • Arranging a visit to the school to see the room in which the test/interview will take place ahead of time
  • Building additional time into the interview schedule to allow for an anxious student to take a break if necessary

If you indicate that you have SEND on your application form, it will be reviewed by our SEND staff and if your needs are complex or significant we may invite you and your parents to meet with us to ensure we are prepared to meet your needs.
