I was first introduced to EMS in Year 9, when I attended some Royal Institution Masterclasses in Maths, exploring different areas of maths in a fun and interactive way, solving problems and puzzles each session. I then attended the Enrichment Course for Maths in Year 10 and 11, and in year 10 I decided this was the place I wanted to do my A Levels. The atmosphere was so relaxed and comfortable, I thought it would be a great place for me to study at. Another factor that’s unique to EMS that was appealing was the EMC project; I had considered an EPQ when applying to both EMS and Exeter College after completing one in Year 11, but the EMC was more unique and when we were later informed you do a few of these projects for EMC, it definitely appealed more than the EPQ. My EMC for Year 13 is based on a topic I first encountered in Year 9 through the masterclasses held at EMS: The Four Colour Theorem.
My ambition is to become a teacher of Maths at a secondary school or college, helping 11-18 year olds to develop their mathematical ability and enjoy maths. I’ve wanted to teach since primary school, because I love to help people, and the process of explaining and going through any part of maths is so rewarding for both student and teacher.
