James’ own education journey began by studying A Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry overseas before completing his MPhys Physics at the University of Oxford. After a short time in IT consultancy, James pursued a DPhil in medical imaging, deepening his interest in the power of science to change lives.

Since then, James has been involved with education for over 20 years, always as a Physics teacher and then also holding leadership positions including Head of Department and Deputy Head (Academic) in a secondary school. In August 2024, James joined Exeter College as the Head of Teaching and Learning, where he is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of teaching and learning and expanding post-16 staff development opportunities.

Outside of work, James is a devoted family-man with his wife, two grown-up children, and two dogs and enjoys reading, staying active, and painting and gaming with Warhammer.
