For Students

Exeter Maths School isn’t just for our own students. It’s a key part of our mission to inspire and support primary and secondary students who love maths, physics and computing wherever you are in our region  – from Poole to Penzance. Across the year there are opportunities to attend enrichment days and masterclasses, share ideas and problems with other enthusiasts and work with loads of fun and challenging online resources.

We also like to get out and about, visiting schools to give careers talks or lead enrichment days. We’re open to working with anyone but prioritise schools that are too far away for their students to attend many of our activities and those that do not have easy access to alternative provision.

How it works

Our Outreach student programmes are teacher-nominated, which means that applications need to be received from the student’s school and not from students or their families. Heads of Maths and Physics at state schools across Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Somerset are sent paperwork for each relevant course.  Teachers are welcome to contact the school to check that they are on the database to receive this information. Many of our programmes run annually and, as a result, the summer term each year is a key nomination period for programmes starting in the autumn term.

Over-subscription

Sometimes we have more people signing up for events than spaces available and so we’ve created criteria for deciding which students take part. In order of priority, for EMS events, we select to achieve:

  1. A place for all students in care and those eligible for Free School Meals
  2. A place for students eligible for Pupil Premium funding
  3. Parity between Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset
  4. Gender balance
  5. A place for students from schools with low progress scores
  6. A place for students who live in a deprived area according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation (based on the 4th and 5th quintiles)
  7. Engagement with schools that have not previously nominated students for events
  8. Parity between all other schools

For events that are supported by other organisations, we will apply their own over-subscription criteria.
